Adventure Impact: Relish New Experiences and Grab the Opportunity
Nikki Loera shares how her trip helped her become the dynamic college student she is today

My name is Nikki Loera, and I am currently a third year student at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. I am pursuing a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, double concentrating in real estate and marketing, as well as pursuing a double minor in Spanish and Health and Exercise Science. My career goals include obtaining my real estate license and working in social media marketing within the sports industry. I graduated from DCIS back in 2022 but was heavily involved with the community at West High School when I found this opportunity with the West Travel Club.
I traveled for Spring Break 2022 to Puerto Rico alongside Walle and many incredible students. My experience in Puerto Rico was impactful to who I am today and shaped the goals and passions I have for my future career that is approaching quickly as I graduate next spring. Reflecting on the experiences that have brought me to where I am today, I realize that this life-changing trip at 17 years old profoundly influenced the direction of my life, inspiring me to pursue a lifestyle of travel, understand the importance of taking every opportunity, and encouraging me to embrace new experiences.
During my time in Puerto Rico, I had the chance to immerse myself in its vibrant, beautiful, inspiring culture—from the people and architecture to the food and activities that Puerto Rico has to offer. I soaked up and enjoyed every single moment alongside my best friends and created unforgettable memories. In just one week we hiked some of their most beautiful rainforests, explored caves, learned to make a traditional Puerto Rican meal, visited beaches, took a dancing class, swam in the bioluminescent bay (which helped me overcome my fear of water), and walked the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan. One of the most memorable experiences was visiting a local school and interacting with students. We toured their school and learned about their academics, gaining new perspectives. I felt an incredible sense of connection to Puerto Rico, especially through our tour guide, Astacio, who shared his passion for the island’s rich history.
Before this trip I had never traveled without family but I found a new independence after this experience. I love travel even more than before and I continue to hold onto that passion in my adult life. At any opportunity of travel, I push myself to take the risk because we never know how our experiences change the trajectory of our lives. Travel, for me, is about more than just seeing new places—it’s about meeting new people, trying new things, and immersing myself in diverse cultures. The world is too beautiful and life is too short not to take these opportunities. The lifestyle of traveling is so important to me and I hope that my career continues to allow me to see the world.
My advice to any student thinking about taking travel opportunities like this one, is to just do it because you never know how it shapes your passions and desires in your own life. Travel challenges you to grow as a person, and in my experience, it has helped me become a better version of myself. Not many students have opportunities that the West Travel Club offers so I encourage you to take the risk and explore the world.
I am forever grateful to Walle for extending the invite to me and allowing me to deepen my love for travel. I am equally thankful for the scholarships that made this trip possible. Without their support, I never would have had the chance to experience the beauty of Puerto Rico. The West Travel Club’s commitment to empowering students is truly inspiring. I hope to one day return to Puerto Rico to relive all those amazing memories. Puerto Rico holds a special place in my heart serving as a constant reminder of my love for travel, culture, and personal growth.
