Adventure Impact: Advice from a Westside Adventurer

Paola Chavez takes lessons learned with her to CSU, offers words of advice for all of us.

My name is Paola Chavez and I am currently a freshman at Colorado State University studying Business Administration, having recently graduated from high school. Transitioning from a busy high school schedule to college life has been a significant adjustment. Most of my time is now spent attending classes and studying, and I am learning how to manage my time effectively all over again. In high school, I felt confident about my schedule and what needed to be done next. Now as a college student, I am once again figuring out my path and determining what comes next. I have always been interested in business - as a kid I loved selling candy, fruits, and vegetables. My goal is to obtain a Business degree from Colorado State University and gain experience in the business world and expose myself to the knowledge and network needed to be a leading businesswoman.

In 2023 and 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to travel with the West Travel Club to Greece and Italy. These trips marked several firsts for me — it was my first time seeing the beach and the first time I was away from my family for an extended period. This experience allowed me to embrace independence and discover the beauty of the world in a way I had never imagined. It was truly life-changing, as it motivated me to pursue higher education and inspired me to continue exploring the world.

Following that, I took another adventure with the school, this time to Panama and Costa Rica. The experience was equally amazing, full of excitement and adventure. It was especially memorable to share this journey with friends and teachers whom I deeply appreciate.

These trips have shaped who I am today and how I view the world. They've given me a broader perspective, not just on different cultures and landscapes, but also on life itself. I've learned to embrace new challenges, step outside of my comfort zone, and appreciate the diversity and beauty that exist around the world. These experiences have reminded me that this is just the beginning of my journey — that there is so much more to explore, discover, and learn. They've fueled my desire to continue seeking out new adventures, to push myself to be more open-minded and curious, and to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way.

If you ever have the chance to travel, I highly recommend it. Don’t hesitate; take the opportunity, and don’t look back. The memories and growth you’ll gain are priceless. I’m deeply grateful to Walle and Kennedy for organizing these trips and ensuring students like me can experience the world. I’d also like to thank the scholarships that made it all possible!
